Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium is one of the most renowned cricket stadiums in India. The stadium has been a witness to a great number of exciting innings and records. It is located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in the national capital of India, New Delhi. The stadium was founded in the year of 1883. A number of national and international cricketing events are organized here in the stadium. It is one of the most reputed international cricket grounds not only in India as but the world.  Initially it was a fortress, which was constructed by a Muslim emperor of Delhi Feroz Shah Tughlaq. It was set up as a cricket group in the year of 1883 and boasts of total seating capacity of 55,000 spectators.

History of Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium

Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium is situated in New Delhi.  It has been christened after the name of Feroz Shah Tughlaq, who was one of the powerful emperors of Delhi from 1351-88. So far Fezoz Shah Kotla Stadium has organized a great number of cricketing events. The first cricket match played on the ground of this stadium took place between India and West Indies. This first match played here was a test match, which was played in November, 1948. For a one day international match, the stadium had to wait for a quite long time. The first one day international that match was played in this stadium was between India and Sri Lanka on September 15, 1982.

Flood lights have been installed in this stadium to facilitate day-night matches. Delhi District Cricket Association is the proud owner of this premier stadium and Delhi cricket team is the home team of this magnificent stadium. The end names of the stadium are Pavilion End and Stadium End Many important cricketing events have taken place at the New Delhi Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Some of the most striking events include Anil Kumble electrifying performance in which he bagged 10 wickets playing against Pakistan. In the years of 1958 and 1959, West Indies registered a colossal test total of 644/8 against India cricket team. In the years of 2004 and 2005 Pakistan created the highest one day score of 303 against the host team India. India made the lowest test score of 75 runs against West Indies in 1987-1988.

  • The highest test total: 644/8 by West Indies against India in the 1958-59.
  • The highest one day total: 303 by Pakistan against India in the 2004-05.
  • The lowest total: 75 by India against West Indies in the 1987-88.
  • S Venkataraghavan debuted in international cricket and knocked down New Zealand with 8 for 72 and again 4 for 80 in 1965.
  • Bishen Singh Bedi and Erapalli Prasanna picked up 18 wickets collectively in 1970.
  • John Lever of England scored a half century on his debut match in 1976.
  • In 1981, Geoff Boycott broke the world record of test aggregate of Gary Sobers.
  • Sunil Gavaskar hit his 29th century and equaled Don Bradman’s aggregate in 1983.
  • Anil Kumble took 10 wickets against Pakistan in 1999.
  • Sachin Tendulkar broke world record of Sunil Gavaskar in 2005.
