Wankhede Stadium is situated in the city of Mumbai, which is also known as the cricket capital of India. Wankhede Stadium is one of the most prominent cricket stadiums in the country. This stadium was brought into being in the year 1974. Wankhede Stadium boasts of a large seating capacity. It can easily accommodate more than 50,000 people at once. The stadium came into existence after a dispute between Mumbai Cricket Association and Cricket Club, which owns the Brabourne Stadium, less than mile away from the Wankhede Stadium. The dispute took place over the allocation of tickets for cricket matches. The whole scenario became more severe after the Test between India and England took place in the year 1973.

The Wankhede Stadium was constructed in a record 6 months time. There are a number of stadiums in India but no other Indian cricketing venue has given us as many legendary cricketers as the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai has. Wankhede Stadium takes pride in being the home ground of Sachin Tendulkar, who is considered to be the God of cricket. The stadium also organizes IPL matches and is home to the IPL team Mumbai Indians. It underwent a huge renovation, so as to accommodate more people for the Final of the 2011 World Cup.

History of Wankhede Stadium

First match played in this stadium on January 23rd 1975 was between West Indies and India. India beat West Indies by stupendous 201 runs. So far, 22 matches have been played on this ground, and India has emerged as the most successful team in all the matches which have been played here. Sunil Gavaskar has been the most prolific batsman on this ground while Anil Kumble has had privilege of being the most prolific bowler of Wankhede Stadium.

The pitch of Wankhede Stadium is quite popular among bowlers as it favors the bowlers while bowling. Among all types of bowlers, spinners get the highest advantage in the pitch. Wankhede is the second biggest cricket stadium located in Mumbai, and has witnessed some of the great innings by the sport enthusiasts in this stadium. Some of important innings on this stadium include Sunil Gavaskar’s 205 runs against West Indies in the year 1978. Besides Gavaskar’s spectacular inning, Kallicharan also took the stadium by storm by scoring 187 runs in the year 1978. The stadium holds a number of records like Ian Bothams record when he hit a century and took thirteen wickets in a Test in the year 1980. Ravi Shashtri also showed his charisma in this stadium by hitting six sixes in an over. Vinod Kambli also scored a 224 in the year 1992, which is the highest score by any Indian in this Wankhede stadium.

Wankhede Stadium is one of the biggest stadiums in the country. Since the city of Mumbai faces space crunch hats off to its population, the stadium provides space for many events that take place in the city. Apart from cricket, a number of big events are also organized in this stadium with great pomp and show. For instance, International pop singer, Shakira organized her singing concert here on March 25 in the year of 2007.
